Cutting A Diamond Slit Back T-Shirt
I have never liked wearing regular t-shirts, just as a personal preference, but I have about a million nice ones. I was afraid of messing up if I tried to cut them, but eventually I practiced with some old ones I didn’t care about, and now most of my t-shirts end up with a little makeover/surgery. Here are the basics for how to cut one, and my most recent cut.
Make sure you have a sharp pair of scissors.
Practice on a t-shirt you don’t care about.
Start conservative. You can always cut more, but there’s no “Undo” button.
Take your time.
Think about getting the back of the scissors, where the blades come together, in line with where you last cut before cutting again. This will keep your cuts smoother.
Make sure all parts of the fabric are laid out flat and smooth before you start cutting.
Have fun!
I went for a cut-out neckline and some diamond slits along the back of this shirt. Watch the movie below for the full process.
Cut out the neckline, staying close to the seams.
Fold the shirt in half so that the side seams are together.
Cut diamonds out of the back of the shirt, staying small.
Even out any jagged cuts, and enjoy!
I evened out the neckline a bit more in the front after the video to make it smoother.
I imagined the cuts in the back retaining more of a diamond shape, but this shirt is so wonderfully soft, it makes sense that they fall more loosely.
I’ve also had people ask if I will just cut their t-shirts for them. I’m happy to do that if you’re in the area for $5 per shirt! Just share with me what style you’re thinking of and we can set up a way for me to get the shirt from you.
